About the South Coast Basin
Oregon’s South Coast basin covers the rain-fed rivers of the southern Coast Range and Klamath Mountains that drain directly to the Pacific. The Oregon Water Resources Department’s South Coast Basin runs from Tenmile Lakes and Coos Bay south through Bandon and Port Orford to the California line; the Rogue River basin splits it in two at Gold Beach, so the Pistol, Chetco and Winchuck rivers around Brookings form its southern part. It includes the Coos, Millicoma, Coquille, Sixes, Elk, Pistol, Chetco and Winchuck watersheds and many small coastal streams. River Flow Planner covers 17 active gages here: USGS gages such as the South Fork Coquille River at Powers (record since 1916) and the Chetco River near Brookings (record since 1969), OWRD gages on Ferry, Johnson and Floras creeks and the Elk and Winchuck rivers, and five Coos River basin gages operated by the Coos Watershed Association. The Middle Fork Coquille River gage began in 2024 and the South Fork Coquille at Myrtle Point began reporting discharge in 2023, so their statistics are preliminary, and the new OWRD North Fork Coquille above Whitley Creek gage reports river stage only (from 2026). The USGS Coquille River at Coquille gage measures the tidal river and is shown as a tide station, with its measured water levels and NOAA tide predictions. It also covers 9 tide stations in Coos Bay, the Coquille River estuary, Port Orford and Brookings: Charleston, Port Orford and the USGS Coquille River at Coquille gage measure water levels, and the other six are NOAA tide prediction stations.
What River Flow Planner shows for each gage
Each gage page turns the agency’s full daily record into planning tools for fishing, rafting, kayaking, swimming, irrigation and in-stream work:
- Summary hydrograph of typical flows through the year
- Percent of time flows fall within a range you choose
- Likely range of flows on future dates you pick
- How a recent period compares with normal, plus a year-by-year spaghetti plot
- Flood frequency statistics for USGS gages with peak-flow records
- CSV downloads and links to current real-time data and short-term forecasts
- For NOAA tide stations: a tide forecast chart and tide calendar for dates you pick, the highest and lowest tides of the next 5 years, and, at Charleston, Port Orford and Coquille, how often the tide reaches levels you choose
