About the Klamath River Basin

The Klamath River begins at Upper Klamath Lake near Klamath Falls, Oregon, and flows about 250 miles southwest across the California line to the Pacific Ocean near Klamath, California. Its basin covers roughly 15,700 square miles of southern Oregon and northern California.

Major tributaries include the Williamson, Sprague and Wood rivers above Upper Klamath Lake, and the Shasta, Scott, Salmon and Trinity rivers in California. The Lost River, Tule Lake, Clear Lake and Gerber Reservoir are part of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Klamath Project. The four mainstem hydroelectric dams below Keno (J.C. Boyle, Copco 1, Copco 2 and Iron Gate) were removed in 2023–2024, so records at gages downstream of Keno combine regulated and free-flowing periods.
